Big Ten Academic Alliance Resources and Programs

Academic Leadership Program
One of the most successful Big Ten Academic Alliance leadership initiatives is the Academic Leadership Program (ALP). Established in 1989, this intensive professional development experience develops the leadership and managerial skills of faculty who have demonstrated exceptional ability and academic promise. Many of the program's nearly 1000 Fellows have gone on to serve with distinction as college presidents, provosts, and deans.

Capitalizing on distance-learning technology allows Big Ten Academic Alliance member universities to increase student access to specialized courses. Faculty enjoy the CourseShare program for the chance to collaborate with respected peers at Big Ten Academic Alliance universities, expand course enrollments with talented students, employ new technologies, fill curricular gaps, preserve specialized courses, and strengthen student recruitment efforts.

Department Executive Officers Seminar
Each year approximately 60 department heads and chairs from Big Ten Academic Alliance universities come together for a unique leadership development seminar. Topics at this three-day event range from conflict resolution and time management to faculty development, performance reviews, and group problem solving.

Global Collaborations
Today’s world-class universities provide the best in teaching and research to prepare students and scholars to compete and contribute in our global society. The Senior International Officers, who provide executive leadership in the global arena for the Big Ten Academic Alliance universities, work together to facilitate an international perspective throughout all aspects of the educational experience at Big Ten Academic Alliance universities, including teaching, research and service.

IT Support for Collaborative Research
The Big Ten Academic Alliance Chief Information Officers are pioneering technology that makes the Big Ten Academic Alliance the best and easiest place to collaborate in higher education.  This environment includes an interconnected high speed fiber network, online resources and applications that are securely and easily shared across the Big Ten Academic Alliance, and a trusted place to explore leading-edge technologies which advance the academic and research missions of our universities.

Library Resources
The universities of the Big Ten Academic Alliance have spent more than a century building some of the strongest research collections in the country. Through programs such as UBorrow and interlibrary loan, faculty have access to the 120,000,00 + print volumes in the combined collection and many thousands of electronic books and journals purchased collectively. As founding members of the HathiTrust Digital Library Big Ten Academic Alliance members can access digitized scans of books and journals with over 3.7 million volumes in the public domain that are fully viewable.

Summer Research Opportunities Program
Through the Big Ten Academic Alliance SROP program, students can enhance their academic and research skills by working one-on-one with a faculty mentor from top-ranked research institutions. Faculty work with undergraduate students to give them exposure to Big Ten Academic Alliance graduate departments.

Traumatic Brain Injury Research Collaboration
The Traumatic Brain Injury Research Collaboration is a collaborative research effort emerging from the Big Ten, the Big Ten Academic Alliance, and the Ivy League, whose mission is to better understand the causes and effects of sport-related concussion and head injuries. Dennis L. Molfese, professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, directs the effort that brings together Big Ten Academic Alliance researchers to work collaboratively on this common problem, giving them access to a larger collection of laboratories, coaches, athletic trainers, scientists, and team
