Professorial Advancement Initiative (PAI) - Search Committees

Faculty Hiring Committee Training

Big Ten Academic Alliance institutions seek to explore a scalable, systematic change to the university URM hiring culture through partnership with campus experts and actively engaging with STEM departments. Through PAI, we offer diversity hiring workshops to faculty search committees. While many campuses have established training opportunities, we will provide additional training from resources from across all Big Ten Academic Alliance universities.

Our training program is for participating PAI institution faculty and administrators that are serving as a faculty search committee chair or member, department heads, and administrators working with search committees. Whether you need a half-day program or a two-day program, we can work with you to identify the best training for your campus.

Topics covered include but are not limited to:

  • Running a search
  • Diversity of a search committee
  • Unconscious bias and the impact on candidate evaluation
  • Strategies for managing unconscious bias
  • Running fair and effective on-campus and final interviews
  • Impartial evaluation of candidates

Big Ten Academic Alliance Directory

The Big Ten Academic Alliance Directory is a listing of PAI participants. The Directory is designed to increase the visibility of postdoctoral scholars who bring diverse perspectives and experiences to higher education. The Directory will be promoted among hiring committees at Big Ten Academic Alliance member universities, and the searchable, online database is only available to Big Ten Academic Alliance faculty and administrators.

About NSF AGEP

AGEP Transformation Alliance projects are collaborative research projects representing new strategic alliances of institutions and organizations to develop, implement, and study evidence-based models to transform doctoral education, postdoctoral training, and faculty advancement for historically underrepresented minorities in specific STEM disciplines and/or STEM education research fields. Embedded social science and education research contributes to the knowledge base about how transformational models eliminate or mitigate negative factors and promote positive policies and practices for historically underrepresented minorities.
