NRMN-CAN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE

The NIH-funded National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) – Big Ten Academic Alliance Academic Network initiative addresses the need for greater diversity in the biomedical academic research workforce across the country. This initiative is designed to support the academic career path of biomedical researchers, with emphasis on those from underrepresented backgrounds.

One of the goals of the NRMN-CAN program is to prepare postdoctoral researchers and junior faculty for the submission of strong research and research career development proposals for funding. It is recognized that research proposals are a genre of writing whose mastery is essential for the success of independent researchers. Further, though these skills can be consciously taught and mastered, a brief exposure is insufficient for developing the skills needed. To meet these needs, we are recruiting experienced faculty investigators to become NRMN-CAN Grantmanship Coaches.

The inaugural NRMN-CAN event will be a Professional Development Conference at the Big Ten Conference Center in Rosemont, IL, November 1-3, 2015. At this conference postdoctoral researchers and junior faculty will learn how to excel in an academic research career and write successful NIH grant applications. In parallel, experienced faculty will receive training to become NRMN-CAN Grantsmanship Coaches and begin coaching trainees. Following the conference, trainees will have the opportunity to continue grantsmanship training at their home campus with the coach they have met at the conference. Please view the conference agenda for session details.
